Burglar is a compact arcade-style platformer for the Classic Mac in which the player scampers across single-screen stages, scooping up gold while dodging patrolling enemies. Released in 1990 by Steven Frederick Hoover, it favors quick reflexes and short sessions over deep strategy, with adjustable speed for varied hardware.GameplayEach level is a small platform layout dotted with gold to collect; clearing the screen advances play, while contact with an enemy ends the run. The pace is brisk and the controls are deliberately simple, suiting the keyboard-and-screen idioms of late System 6 software.Speed and tuningBecause the original loop was tuned to slower Macs, Burglar runs very fast on later machines. A built-in speed setting lets players throttle the action so the game remains playable on faster 68k systems and under emulation.System supportBurglar is a 68k application that runs from System 6.x through Mac OS 9. It is comfortable inside Mini vMac and similar emulators, where the slowdown controls are particularly useful.Display quirksUnder Mac OS 9 the playfield can render with a yellow tint, an artifact of the original color choices on later system palettes.
