About

Fawn is a 1995 HyperCard role-playing adventure by Greg Gillis of Armadillo Games, set on a futuristic outer-space world of the same name. You play Lance, a member of a special agency, leading a three-character party (Lance, Vincent, and Sarah) through roughly 100 screens of exploration, puzzles, and animated battles.Setup and partyFawn drops you onto a distant planet as part of a small investigative team. The party-based structure is unusual for a HyperCard title of the era: rather than a single avatar, you coordinate three characters, each with their own role, across a top-down explorable world.GameplayThe game advertised "several hours worth of gameplay," battle scenes, and a detailed inventory system. Combat is screen-based and animated, with puzzle-solving and item use driving progression. It was Armadillo Games' first RPG title.System requirementsFawn requires HyperCard 2.3 (or the free HyperCard Player 2.3) or later, a 68030 or faster CPU (PowerPC recommended), a 256-color display (16-bit recommended), System 7 or greater, and 3 MB or more of free RAM.Sequel and distributionA direct sequel, Fawn 2, followed with over 200 cards, an expanded storyline, full-color animated battles, and improved sound. Both titles were released as freeware and the author explicitly permitted CD-ROM redistribution. Fawn was distributed through Info-Mac as fawn-hc.hqx by azwald@io.org.
