About

Foobar Versus the DEA is a 1996 vertically scrolling shoot-'em-up for Classic Mac OS by Tom Kluge and Dr. Dick (Funner Software). Players pilot the heroine Foobar in a lone-wolf raid on a Drug Enforcement Agency compound to free her boyfriend Ned and destroy NOSEY, the facility's surveillance computer.Politics in pixelsThe game is overtly political. It takes positions in favor of LGBTQ rights, drug-policy reform and free speech, and is widely cited as the first arcade-style game with explicit gay-rights themes. Cutscenes and end-of-level briefings carry the message rather than burying it in subtext.GameplayThe action is classic top-down vertical scrolling. Foobar's craft strafes a fortified base, dodging guard fire and turret arcs while collecting weapon upgrades and health pickups. Levels escalate from perimeter approach into the heart of the DEA complex and a final confrontation with NOSEY.System requirementsDistributed for 68k Macintoshes running System 7.0 through Mac OS 9, the game also runs cleanly under SheepShaver and Mini vMac. Version 1.1.4 is the canonical Info-Mac release.Series and legacyTwo sequels followed in the mid-1990s: Foobar vs. the FCC and Foobar vs. His Local School Board, extending the satirical anti-censorship arc. The trilogy is preserved by the LGBTQ Video Game Archive as an early milestone in queer game history.
