About

Backgammon is a freeware classic-Mac implementation of the ancient board game, written by David Young and published by Solosoft, with version 2.01 circulating on the Info-Mac archive. It includes a built-in computer opponent so a single player can sit down and play, and its compact black-and-white presentation keeps it fast and responsive on even the oldest Macs.GameplayStandard backgammon rules with the familiar 24-point board, doubling, and bear-off. The included AI opponent gives solo players a steady sparring partner, and matches move along briskly thanks to the lean 1-bit graphics.Performance and LookBecause the board is rendered in black and white, the program is small and runs smoothly on Mac System 6, 7, and 8 alike, without the sluggishness of color rewrites of the same era.Author and PublisherAuthored by David Young (the 1987 origin date is noted in the archive), released through Solosoft, and now considered hard to find outside historical Mac archives.RequirementsRuns on classic Mac OS 6/7/8. The Info-Mac distribution (backgammon-201.hqx) is BinHex 4.0 encoded.
