About

Stones is a freeware Macintosh implementation of the ancient sowing game known variously as Awele, Ouare, Kalah and Mancala. Author Nathaniel Tagg of the University of Guelph chose the neutral name "Stones" rather than pick one regional variant, and shipped a compact single-player game that the author describes as a fun way to kill a few minutes here and there. An ancient sowing gameThe game belongs to the African and Mesopotamian Mancala family, played by picking up the stones from a pit and sowing them one by one around a board of pits. The author notes the rules family directly in the game's notes rather than naming a single national variant.Computer opponentStones is played against a built-in AI. The author rates the computer player as "not bad" and pitches the title as a casual diversion rather than a tournament-strength engine.Version 1.1 changesThe 1.1 release adds automatic saving of user preferences between sessions and a refreshed sound set; the author notes the new sounds are no longer so blatantly ripped off as those in earlier builds.Freeware from Nathaniel TaggThe game is distributed as freeware by Nathaniel Tagg (ntagg@uoguelph.ca) at the University of Guelph, with no shareware fee or registration nag.
