About

RChess 2.2.2 is a free, deliberately humorous Macintosh chess program by Robert Purves (with notes from Richard A. Fowell). Its self-described market gap is that it can actually be beaten at its lower levels, and it is given away gratis with no shareware nag or registration request attached.Playing StrengthThe author reports that RChess usually beats its programmer at level 4, often at level 3, and occasionally at level 2, leaving lower levels genuinely accessible to casual players, with tongue-in-cheek hints that the higher levels are not as fearsome as they sound.PerformanceThe engine examines roughly 1500 moves per second on an LC III and around 3600 per second on a Quadra 650, though the author cautions that most of those examined moves are weak ones no human would consider.DistributionRChess is distributed free of charge through the Info-Mac Archive (brd/r-chess-222.hqx). Author contact is listed as robert.purves@stonebow.otago.ac.nz.
