About

GNU Shogi 1.1E for the Macintosh is a port of the UNIX GNU Shogi engine (version 1.1, patch level 02) that plays Shogi, the Japanese equivalent of Chess. Captured pieces can be dropped back onto the board by the captor and almost all pieces can promote, producing an aggressive game that grows more complicated toward the end.How Shogi differs from ChessTwo rules set Shogi apart: captured pieces re-enter play under the captor's control, and most pieces promote when crossing into enemy territory. Endgames stay dense rather than thinning out.EngineThe Mac build wraps the GNU Shogi UNIX engine, giving it a native interface while preserving the underlying search and evaluation code.RequirementsMacintosh with 68020 or better, System 6.0.7 or later, 600 KB disk space, and 1.2 MB RAM for the engine itself. Includes a rules document.DistributionReleased as free software under the GNU project, distributed through the Info-Mac archive in BinHex form.
