AboutNetRisk is a network-aware Macintosh clone of the classic Parker Brothers board game Risk, written by Roy Wood and published under the Silicon Angst Software banner. It is built around AppleTalk so that up to six players on compact Macs can conquer the world together over a local network. The version preserved here is 1.1, released in August 1992.Multiplayer over AppleTalkNetRisk is designed for multiplayer play across AppleTalk networks, supporting up to six concurrent players. Version 1.1 added support for multiple AppleTalk zones, addressing one of the most common complaints about the original 1.0 release.GameplayPlay follows the familiar Risk loop: claim territories, reinforce armies, and roll dice to attack neighboring regions in pursuit of world domination. The Mac interface keeps the board, dice, and turn controls on a single window suitable for the small black-and-white screens of the era.Version 1.1 changesAccording to the author's August 1992 release note, version 1.1 fixes a number of "annoying problems" from the initial release in addition to its multi-zone support. Communications Toolbox support was planned for a future 1.2 release.DistributionNetRisk ships as the BinHex archive net-risk-11.hqx in info-mac/game/brd and is preserved on Macintosh Garden as 1991-era freeware/shareware. |
