About

Utopia is a freeware color-vision and reflex test for the Macintosh by Gilles Esposito-Farese and Nicolas Graner, with its name taken from a Jorge Luis Borges short story. A window fills with squares of many colors; one color appears only once while the rest appear at least twice, and the player must click the unique square as quickly as possible.Gameplay loopEach round the odd-color-out grows progressively closer in hue to its neighbors and gradually fainter, ratcheting up the difficulty as long as the player keeps connecting clicks.Difficulty and modesA wide range of options spans easy children's settings up to configurations the authors describe as reserved for gifted mutants. Color squares can be replaced with picture sets to make recognition harder, and version 1.1.0 adds new picture sets plus a two-player mode.RequirementsUtopia should run on any Macintosh with at least 256 colors available.LicensingThe game is freeware. The authors ask players who enjoy it to consider donating to a local or national Retinal Degeneration association.
