series of portable music player models designed and marketed by Apple Inc.

As part of its huge September 2007 iPod event, Apple introduced the first iPod touch, essentially the original iPhone with its phone circuitry removed.

Better yet, the iPod touch was a bit smaller, significantly thinner, and also lighter than the iPhone. Best of all, it didn’t tie you to a two-year AT&T wireless plan. You bought it, you owned it, you did what you wanted with it.

Unlike the iPhone, the iPod touch has no camera, no wireless data option, and no Bluetooth. Networking is strictly over WiFi.

In September 2006, Apple completely changed the configuration of the iPod nano, giving it a wider, larger screen so it could display video content. The iPod nano also got a new range of colors.

The low-end 4 GB version was available only in silver, and the 8 GB in silver, turquois blue, mint green, and black. There was also a Product (RED) 8 GB version, and Apple added a pink 8 GB model on 2008.01.22.

The 2″ QVGA (320 x 240 pixels) display made for a wider, heavier device, and battery life remains at 24 hours for music – or 5 hours for video.

digital audio player

When most MP3 players were based on flash memory, Apple built the original iPod around a tiny 1.8″ hard drive. And on January 11, 2005, Apple introduced the first iPod built using flash memory, the original iPod shuffle.

Unlike competing flash-based MP3 players, the Shuffle has no menu system. You load it with the songs you want to hear, and it takes over from there. You can skip to the next song, but you can’t select it.

Apple saw this as a feature, using the slogans Life Is Random and Give Chance a Chance to market the smallest, lightest, lowest cost, and most rugged iPod to date.

line of Apple music players

Apple replaced the small iPod mini with the even smaller iPod nano in September 2005, initially offered in 2 GB and 4 GB capacities in either a white or black plastic enclosure. a 1 GB version was added in February 2006.

The big difference in size came from leaving behind the Mini’s 1″ hard drive and using flash memory, which allowed the iPod nano to be thinner, narrower, and lighter. It also had a smaller color display at 1.5″ instead of the Mini’s 1.67″.

With its plastic enclosure, the original iPod nano was easily scratched, which led to a class action lawsuit that was settled in October 2008 at a cost of $22.5 million to Apple – and a $15-25 benefit to each registered user.
