About

Ether Contention is a 1997 full-color, overhead-view dogfighting game for the Macintosh by Abe Daun of Abedaun Software. The pilot circles a top-down arena, lining up shots on enemy aircraft; downing five opponents advances the player to the next level in an arcade-style ladder of escalating air combat.GameplayPlay is pure aerial scrum: bank, throttle, and fire from a fixed top-down perspective while enemy planes weave to intercept. There is no cockpit instrumentation to manage, and progression is tied directly to confirmed kills rather than to mission objectives.PresentationThe game uses full-color sprite art for aircraft and terrain, a step up from the era's many monochrome shareware shooters, with a clean overhead view that keeps the entire engagement readable on a small classic Mac display.AuthorDistributed by Abedaun Software, an independent shareware label run by Abe Daun, who released the title in 1997 alongside other small Mac games of the period.System requirementsA color-capable classic Mac running System 7 or later, with enough free memory for the sprite-driven combat scene; representative of late-90s Mac shareware aimed at the installed 68k and early PowerPC base.
