The iPhone 4S also has better cameras: 8 MP on the back and 0.9 MP on the front, up from 5 MP and 0.3 MP respectively. This was the first iPhone to support 1080p video recording and the first with Bluetooth 4.0 support.
Apple took orders for over 1 million units in its first 24 hours of pre-orders and sold 4 million during the first four days of retail sales.

The iPhone 3G had been a step forward in some areas – especially in adding 3G data support – but in other areas it was no better than the original iPhone . With the iPhone 3GS, Apple took a few more steps forward with a faster processor, a better camera, video capability, and a 32 GB option.
The iPhone 3GS looks very similar to the original iPhone, but with the same plastic back as the 3G. The more efficient CPU runs nearly 50% faster than in the previous model, doubling overall performance, and it has twice as much system memory to work with. It has a 3 MP autofocus camera and supports video for the first time – albeit only 640 x 480 VGA. It was also the first iPhone with a 24-bit color display.
The 3GS was introduced in 16 GB and 32 GB versions, with the 8 GB model added in June 2010 when the iPhone 4 was introduced. The 8 GB iPhone 3GS remained in production until September 2012.

The iPhone 5S marked the beginning of 64-bit power. While the Android world was going with 4-core 32-bit processors, Apple raised the bar with its dual-core 64-bit A7, which has about twice the power of the A6.
The iPhone 5S also introduced a built-in fingerprint sensor in the iPhone’s home button known as Touch ID. It was also the first iPhone available in gold.
The 5S has an improved camera and a dual-LED flash that can adjust for different lighting situations. Automatic HDR is standard on the 5S – it had been an user option on the 4S and 5. Digital image stabilization is also new with the 5S.

Claiming that “the only thing that changed is everything”, Apple unveiled the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus on September 9, 2015. Well, not everything. The 2015 models look just like the 2014 iPhones at first glance, although there is a new rose gold color.
The iPhone 6S is a half-ounce heavier than the iPhone 6 , although its dimensions are the same. Screen resolution remains 1334 x 750 pixels, but the screen is pressure sensitive like Apple Watch (Apple calls this 3D Touch). Finishes include gold, silver, space gray, and rose gold.
The 2015 iPhones are made of 7000 Series Aluminum, the same material used for the Apple Watch and a step ahead of the iPhone 6.

The big stuff first: The iPhone 7 is waterproof, no longer comes with a built-in headphone jack, and adds Jet Black to its color lineup. It’s the same size as the iPhone 6 and 6S , and there is no longer a 16 GB model – choices are 32 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB, but Jet Black is only available for the higher capacity models.
On the tech front, the iPhone 7 is powered by the new Apple A10 processor. With all that power, Apple promises “up to” 2 hours more battery life when accessing the Internet than the iPhone 6S.
The iPhone’s rear camera has an f/1.8 lens, up from f/2.2 on recent iPhones, which transmits about 70% more light. Apple now uses four LEDs for its True Tone flash.

19ᵗʰ generation of the iPhone (Pro version, 2025)
The choice of Aluminum marks a second major shift in the type of materials used in the frame of flagship iPhone models. Up until the 14 Pro, iPhones used Stainless Steel, then transitioned to Titanium with the iPhone 15.
With the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, the choice for an Aluminum alloy was made for better heat dissipation and easier colorization of the metal. This Late 2025 iDevice also comes with a new-to-iPhone feature called a vapor chamber, which should help aid in cooling the A19 Pro chip. .
iOS devices running 18 and later with an A17 Pro chip or better (iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, or all iPhone 16 models+). While device capability has increased over the years, it’s theorized by some that older devices don’t have enough RAM to properly run Apple Intelligence. This feature is gradually rolling as AI is new to the industry as a whole. .

One of the biggest complaints about the original iPhone was that it didn’t use 3G for wireless data, instead depending on the far slower – average data speeds between 75-135 Kbps – EDGE protocol . Another complaint was the lack of third-party apps. The iPhone 3G addressed both of these.
The iPhone 3G is very similar to the original iPhone except for the addition of 3G networking, with typical speeds in the 400-700 Kbps range, so about 5x as fast as EDGE, and a real GPS chip. The CPU is clocked to the same speed. It has the same 2 MP fixed focus camera. And it has a less powerful battery.
The other big improvement was iPhone OS 2.0, which for the first time supported third-party software on the iPhone using the App Store.

With the iPhone 5, Apple left behind the 3.5″ display every previous iPhone had used, replacing it with a taller (or wider – in landscape mode) 4″ screen displaying 1136 x 640 pixels, the same 16:9 aspect ratio of HD TV. That’s 18.3% more pixels.
The iPhone 5 runs Apple’s more powerful A6 processor, introduced Apple’s Lightning USB connector, is 18% thinner than the iPhone 4S , and despite its bigger screen is also 20% lighter than the 4S.
The iPhone 5 has a fully machined aluminum enclosure and shipped in either black and slate or white and silver.

The iPhone 6 broke with Apple’s traditionally small displays to keep the iPhone competitive with the larger Android smartphones that dominated the market and were cutting into iPhone sales. The iPhone 6 moved to a 4.7″ display from the 4.0″ of the iPhone 5 family, while the 6 Plus was a substantial 5.5″.
The iPhone 6 is bigger and heavier than the iPhone 5S , although it is a bit thinner at 0.27″. Screen resolution is 1334 x 750 pixels. The iPhone 6 screen is curved at its edges, and its back is made of aluminum. Finishes include gold, silver, and space gray.
The larger size provides room for a bigger battery, and the iPhone 6 specs claim about 20% more time for phone calls, online access, listening to music, streaming video, or whatever else you may do. Apple moved the power button from the top of the iPhone to the side, claiming it improved accessibility.

With its 5.5″ display, the iPhone 6 Plus was very competitive with the largest Android smartphones and phablets, which had helped Android cut into into iPhone sales.
The iPhone 6 Plus is even bigger and heavier than the iPhone 6 , and it was the first iPhone to provide a full 1920 x 1080 resolution display – the same as HD TV. The screen is curved at its edges, and its back is made of aluminum. Finishes include gold, silver, and space gray.
The larger size provides room for a really high capacity battery, and Apple specs claim about twice as much time for phone calls, online access, listening to music, streaming video, or whatever else you may do. Apple moved the power button from the top of the iPhone to the side, claiming it improved accessibility.
